Philadelphia Children's Home of Pignon Haiti
Over a year ago, a group of us went to Pignon, Haiti. We found that at the Philadelphia Children's Home, there were many needs. Now, with the devistating earthquake in January 2010, there is even more need.
It is my goal, along with the Martin Terry, to make a difference at this children's home. We have many ideas:
Help them build a vegetable garden following the principles of permaculture and TEACH them to care for it and keep it going.
Teach English to the Children
Share the love of Christ with the Haitians
These three key components would take a comittment of time and money. Martin and I feel we are being led in this direction.
I need to begin to zealously search for resources to help accomplish these goals. I think the first start is to gather supplies to have shipped to Haiti to start the garden. There are many obstacles to having a garden at this particular children's home:
1) The soil where the garden would be has been a place to dispose of trash for years. The soil could be contaminated.
2) There are goats and peacocks that roam about freely that could destroy the garden. The garden needs a good sturdy fence.
3) Water. We need to set up rain barrels, at the very least.
4) A garden needs maintenance. Children at the orphanage need to learn the importance of growing food and need to learn how to tend a garden.
Things to be taught:
Composting
Worm composting
Caring for chickens
Oh and the list goes on.....
